Foreword

Welcome to the sixth edition of LibRE magazine. For this summer edition, we are happy to share with you some unique historical stories, several important updates on LRE’s current projects including Europe Remembers on Tour, and the launch of the Liberation Route Europe’s International Hiking Trail in London. Consider showing your support today to help make this hiking trail a reality by making a donation to our crowdfunding campaign. For more information visit: liberationroute.com/crowdfunding.

With a successful two legs of Europe Remembers on tour now behind us, we would like to thank all the members who have supported us on this project. It was a special, unique moment to be in Normandy for the 75th anniversary of the D-Day landings. We met dozens of people who, in their own way, are working to keep this history alive. We are looking forward to the upcoming legs of the tour in Paris and Belgium later this summer and the Netherlands in September.

We are very proud to announce that in May, the Liberation Route Europe has become a certified Cultural Route of the Council of Europe, joining 37 other European cultural routes with this prestigious designation. We have also welcomed the French region of Alsace as the newest member of the LRE family.

This issue of LibRE features some unique historical stories, including a look at Operation ‘Bagration’ – the greatest Soviet victory on the Eastern Front, the Red Ball Express in Normandy, and the story of US’ Ghost Army, a secret battalion specialized in field deception tactics to fool the German Army. Furthermore, this issue takes a special look at some of the impacts World War II had on the European landscape including the many aesthetic and symbolic transformations that can still be seen today.

Be sure to follow us on our social media accounts to keep up with all our exciting activities in the next few months.

We wish you all a good read and a wonderful summer!

With kind regards,

The Liberation Route Europe Team
